A BIG prize was awaiting the winners of this fixture in the High Holborne Shield semi-final – a place in the final to be played at Yeovil Town’s Huish Park ground.
Due to a frozen Merriott pitch the tie was switched on the morning to Odcombe’s sloping ground.
With Avishayes playing down the hill first, a 2-0 advantage was built up for half time.
The first was an own goal from an Ollie Hine cross, but the second was a slick passing move down the left flank.
Sam Hollis passed to George Read, who passed on to Dylan Gough, goal! There were signs that this may not be enough and when Read hit the post it was thought it might be a costly miss.
The Tigers fought back in the second half taking the game to 2-2 and extra time.
Avishayes defended up the slope resolutely and threatened the Tiger’s goal.
In the second half Avishayes pushed on and this hard fought game was settled with minutes to go when a Hollis cross was controlled and chipped in to the corner of the net by Read, 3-2 Avishayes.
A great team effort.
