After a successful start to the season holding Chilcompton to a draw, Chard wanted to get into the way of winning.

On Tuesday (August 6) they faced Staplegrove who had just been promoted. Chard were still not at full strength but Jordon Clapp, Tim Legg and Captain Alex Manley were available.

Facing down the slope things started well and after 14m a thunderbolt of a shot from Finlay Downes was parried by the goalkeeper, as Jordon Clapp pounced on the ball a defender got there first and poked it into his own net.

On 37 minutes, a ball over the top and the keeper come out for it, but Jordon Clapp got there first and it squirmed into the net. 2-0 to Chard.

Staplegrove started to fight back and were rewarded with a goal on 43 minutes. With seconds of the half to go they got the equaliser they deserved.

A minute into the second half Staplegrove pressed forward and got their third of the night.

On 72 minutes, an unnecessary foul on the right gave Staplegrove an opportunity, it was delivered into the box and a bullet header into the top corner made it 2-4

The home crowd were disappointed but the Staplegrove travelling supporters were jubilant.

A spokesman for the club said: "Once Chard get a full strength team and regular players playing they will be OK. Jack Male has returned but is injured at the moment. New players are always welcome."
