Papa Johns Community Cup: Chard 21-27 Frome
WITH league fixtures completed Chard put out a club side for this end of season jolly against their fellow Somerset side Frome.
Experienced prop Dave Biss plus young threequarters Ross Colenso and Fin Shoemark were among the very small smattering of regular senior players on show.
The game therefore provided a good opportunity for other fringe players and 2nd teamers to show what they could do particularly in the forwards.
Frome got off to a flyer and scored two unconverted tries in the opening minutes and Chard knew they had a battle on their hands.
To their credit however they put up a good fight and came back so well they got very close to winning the game and provided an enthusiastic crowd with some splendid entertainment.
With 25minutes gone Chard won good lineout ball and hooker Joel Nicholls crossed the line for their first try which was converted by Ieuan Watkins. 7-10.
Just before the interval Frome made the most of some dodgy Chard tackling and ended the half as they had begun it by adding two more tries one of which was converted which them a healthy 7-22 at the interval.
The 2nd half saw Chard up their game and Colenso showed what a clever player he can be by scoring two terrific tries both converted by Watkins.
These two scores brought Chard to within a point so any sort of score would give them victory.
Unfortunately, a few errors crept into their game and gilt-edged chances were missed before a late unconverted try confirmed the visitor’s victory.
For Chard that is the end of the season other than possibly the odd vets game.
