ILMINSTER’s community united to remember all the soldiers who fell for our nation this weekend by hosting a sombre day of Remembrance events on Sunday, November 10.

Remembrance Day commemorates British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women involved in both World Wars, and in all later conflicts.

The build up

Everyone took part in commemorating our fallen soldiers with shops across Ilminster town decorating their windows appropriately with striking displays involving poppies and garlands.

These shops included: The Flower House, St Margaret’s Hospice Centre Charity Shop, Ferne Animal Sanctuary Charity Shop, Ilminster Emporium and Ilminster Hardware.

The town also started their Poppy appeal early with the local Combined Cadets Force stood outside Tesco selling poppies and poppies also being available in most town shops – including both local supermarkets Tesco and COOP.

The Remembrance Day Events

Over a hundred attending the Remembrance parade and service at the Minster Church on Sunday, November 10.

The day commenced with a Holy Communion Service that included the two-minute silence for the year’s Act of Remembrance at 11am.

The Ilminster Royal British Legion (RBL) Branch then hosted Remembrance events including a uniformed marching process starting at Frog Lane just after 2.30pm which included local police and the fire crew, Yeovil and South Somerset MP Adam Dance and Crewkerne cllr Mike Best along with many serving veterans.

After the parade march, the Minster church held an emotional, special Remembrance Service at 3pm where they laid the poppy wreaths on the war memorial outside of the Minster church and the day finished off with a marching band.

The Ilminster RBL thanks everyone who got involved.
