ILMINSTER Town Council has elected a new Mayor.

Councillor Brian Hamilton will be the Mayor for 2024/25, succeeding Councillor Leanne Taylor.

He said:  “Being elected to represent the town of Ilminster as its Mayor is a great privilege and I thank the town council for placing their trust in me.

"With my wife Carol alongside, we hope we can do Ilminster proud and promote our lovely town across the county and further afield.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Cllr Michelle Gunn on being elected as our Deputy Mayor alongside me and I am sure we will work well together for the benefit of our town.

“However, none of this would be achievable without the hard work and dedication of all our staff.

"They work tirelessly in the background to keep our little organisation ticking over and sometimes get overlooked.

"Thank you and I look forward to meeting many of our wonderful residents over the coming twelve months.”

In 1984, Brian achieved his goal of entering service with the Royal Navy where he remained for over 28 years.

During his career, he was fortunate enough to be posted around the UK as well as the Falkland Islands, Middle East, Italy, and Portugal.

Sailing around the world in various vessels and with diverse crews has given Brian a very international perspective on many issues facing our world today.

A spokesperson for Ilminster Town Council said: “At the Annual Full Council Meeting on May 21, the town council elected Cllr Brian Hamilton to be the Mayor of Ilminster for 2024-2025.

“He will replace Cllr Leanne Taylor who has held the position for the last two years and who has represented the town council at many events during her tenure.

“Cllr Hamilton thanked Cllr Taylor for her work in representing the council and looked forward to trying to live up to the high standards that she has set.

“The town council also appointed Cllr Michelle Gunn as the new Deputy Mayor for 2024-2025.”
