A SUPERMARKET worker who spent 52 years at the store in Ilminster, and is a “very well-known face” in the town, retired last week.
Julie Hutchings retired from the Co-op in Ilminster after 52 years, nine months, and three days after she turned 68 this week as well.
Julie started at the Co-op aged 15, just as new decimal money came in.
Her colleagues said in 1980 they believe the Co-op moved premises to its home now, after the premises were destroyed by a fire previously it was a motor repair garage.
Julie has seen numerous changes to the way the Co-op has changed over the years and she “will be greatly missed”.
Her colleagues said Julie is a very well-known face in Ilminster and she also helps out in various charity shops in the town.
Kerry, who worked at the Co-op with Julie, said: “Thank you for all the help you have given me over the years.”
Debbie Passmore, another colleague, added: “What an achievement Julie. You are certainly one of a kind. We wish you all the best.”
Another message from one of the colleagues said: “Julie is exceptional she comes out with brilliant one-liners in conversations, you need to work with her to understand her.
“She doesn’t like modern technology; however, she sounds a pro when you hear her tell customers to go on the internet to download membership cards, etc. You will be greatly missed.”
Paul Chudley, the regional operational manager, made a special trip to come and see Julie on her last day last Friday.
