WALES & West Utilities says it is progressing well with its gas upgrade work in Station Road, Crewkerne.

The ongoing works on South Street/Station Road A357, Crewkerne, by Wales & West Utilities are moving to the next phase of works.

From today, Monday 29 July, Kithill will be reopened to two-way traffic, as will South Street from this junction. There will be a one way order in effect allowing travel from Misterton into Crewkerne. As this now allows for HGVs to reach the trading estate without heading through Haselbury Plucknett, the temporary traffic signals will be removed on the A30 junction. They will need to be put back in place for the final phase.

The work, which began in April involves upgrading nearly 1,500 metres of gas pipes. Barring any engineering difficulties it will finish by the end of September.

As part of the next phase of work Wales & West Utilities has agreed with Somerset Council that the following traffic management will be in place:

A road closure on South Street (20 May – 31 July) will remain closed between the junctions of Blacknell Industrial Estate and Kitt Hill, whilst traffic will only be able to turn right coming out of Blacknell Industrial Estate

Wales & West Utilities Roxanne Whittaker is managing this gas pipe upgrade work and said: "While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Crewkerne. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

"We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

"This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.
