CREWKERNE is gearing up for three days of fun for its Charter Fair.
Crewkerne District Rotary is welcoming Edward Danter's Funfair again this during the first weekend in September.
The funfair starts at 4.45pm on Friday (September 2)and 12noon on Saturday, with the Blackdown Samba Band bringing a touch of the Caribbean to Falkland Square at 6pm on Friday.
A street market in Market Square on Sunday will feature more than 40 stalls, with free parking in all the town car parks.
Visitors will also be able to browse around the many independent shops in the town.
George Smith, president of Crewkerne District Rotary, said: "We have an amazing team of Rotarians working tirelessly to arrange a fun weekend for the town.
"In previous years we have had much praise for the event and even comments saying how the temporary one-way traffic system means the flow of traffic is better than usual.”
Crewkerne’s Charter Fair, formerly St Bartholomew’s Street Fair, is an annual event held on the first Friday and Saturday of September and consists of a street market and fun fair.
It is held under a charter owned by The Rotary Club of Crewkerne District Trust and is organised entirely by volunteers.
St Bartholomew’s Street Fair dates back to Saxon times more than 1,000 years ago and the major traders market was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086.
The fair is reputed to have been granted its charter - a right granted by the King to hold a major annual regional market on the town’s streets over the specified dates - in the time of Henry III (1207-1272).
The earliest surviving court record was made in 1280, which can be found in The British Museum. The fun fair dates from at least 1861.
