As the group lead up to World Burlesque Day on April 26, Laura Edgell (Trixie Valour) and her students wanted to take part in the online World Record Attempt for the World’s Largest Online Burlesque Class - aiming to reach 151 countries and raise awareness that the art form of burlesque is a mental health tool too.

Laura Edgell and the other organisers of this event say it is supposed to be more than just a fun, record-breaking endeavour; it is supposed to also celebrate an art form that empowers individuals, builds confidence, and can even allegedly help improve mental health.

Those joining Laura in her goal to beat the World Record are those who currently attend her classes at the Axminster Guildhall, and those that attend the classes at 1610 Wellness Centre in Chard.

Burlesque is a style of dance that stems from theatre and comedy which has experienced a revival over the past 20 years. It has a focus on the tasteful element of tease and helps many participants with body confidence.

“In a world where we are constantly inundated with unrealistic beauty standards, burlesque offers a refreshing space where people can feel beautiful, strong, and celebrated for who they truly are,” Laura Edgell (otherwise known as Trixie Valour), Burlesque instructor said.

“Beyond boosting confidence, burlesque can serve as a powerful tool for combating depression and anxiety. Studies have shown that physical activity, creative expression, and community support are vital for mental health. Burlesque combines all three. Learning to perform, whether it’s a simple shimmy or a full routine, gives participants a sense of accomplishment. The community aspect fosters connection, reducing feelings of isolation, which are often hallmarks of depression,” she added.

“In a world where woman are constantly battling with our self-esteem, confidence and the mission to look younger, my aim is bringing confidence to woman of all ages, shapes and sizes,” Laura said when explaining her reasoning for the World Record attempt.

“We are hoping we can beat that record. I want to put little old Axminster and Chard on the map, in this wonderful liberating event,” Laura said. “I really want to spread the word to bring confidence, feeling empowered and how burlesque can liberate the soul.”

This event is open to anyone who is curious about the "art of tease", so newcomers are welcome to join in from anywhere around the world.
