HOLYROOD Academy has been awarded a grant from the Siobhan Dowd Trust of £650 to spend on new books for the school library.
The Trust exists to help bring a love of books to students in secondary schools across the UK.
14 deserving students were nominated by their English teachers to be part of a “book spree” at The Chard bookshop, run by Stevie Kesham.
Stevie generously agreed to open the shop exclusively for the chosen students for a whole additional undisturbed hour of book browsing and they spent the time reading and choosing over 70 brand new books for the Holyrood Academy library.
All the students (and staff) had a brilliant time and the buzz over the arrival of the new books is still going this week according to a spokesperson for Holyrood Academy.
The school is hoping to hold a special unboxing party in the library when the new books arrive, and all students involved have first dibs on which brand new book they will get to be the first to withdraw and read.
Kat Wilsher, Holyrood Academy’s whole school literacy lead and house coordinator said: “We are so incredibly grateful to the trust for this grant and for the wonderful event we were able to put on for our students because of it.”
Holyrood Academy also wishes to extend a huge thank you to Kat Wilsher, for all her efforts in securing the grant and organizing the event.
