The Inner Wheel Club of Chard recently celebrated their 74th anniversary with a special dinner at Hornsbury Mill.
Among the guests were Rotary president Richard Harris and his wife Wendy, along with speakers Sue Heward and Gwyneth Jackson.
The gathering also welcomed former members, visitors from other Inner Wheel and Rotary clubs, supporters, and the members' spouses.
It featured a talk on the life of Margaret Bondfield, a notable figure born in Chard.
Ms Bondfield, who came from humble educational beginnings, achieved numerous milestones.
She became the first female general secretary elected to the Trade Union Congress, one of the first Labour women elected to Parliament, the first woman to hold a cabinet position, and the first woman to join the Privy Council in 1924.
She was also the only person with a statue in her honour in Northampton.
This year marks the beginning of a five-year project led by the Chard Museum & Heritage Centre to honour Ms Bondfield's contributions to the trade unions and Parliament, for which all workers, regardless of gender, owe her a debt of gratitude.
Following the enlightening talk, the attendees expressed a desire to visit the museum to learn more about her life and her significant impact on contemporary society.
Looking ahead, the Inner Wheel Club of Chard is gearing up for various activities, with the next Tea Dance scheduled for November 29.
The event will be held at Jenny’s Café & Bistro and will feature a live band.
Posters with more details will be released soon.
As the Inner Wheel Club of Chard embarks on its 75th year, its regular meetings take place on the evening of the second Monday of each month.
