CHARD Reservoir is giving locals the chance to learn more about our native bat species during a guided walk this month.

The Chard Reservoir Local Nature Reserve (LNR) is holding the event on Wednesday, June 19 from 8.45pm and 10.30pm.

The meeting point is Oaklands Car Park. Entry will cost £8 for adults, and £6 for children, which can be paid in cash on the night.

A Chard Reservoir LNR spokesperson said: “Here at Chard Reservoir, we host a variety of endangered and protected species, and that includes several of the UK's bat species.

“Join us for an evening of focusing on our only native flying mammals, and have a chance to listen out for them as we take a dusky stroll through the reservoir.

“Bat detectors are provided, however, please feel free to bring your own, and perhaps a torch as well!

“The rangers will also give you an insight about how Chard Reservoir is managed to preserve these protected animals, so what are you waiting for?

“Booking is essential. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear.

“All children are to be accompanied by adults. Dogs are not permitted at this event. If you have any accessibility issues, please do let us know when you contact countryside@somerset.gov.uk to book your place.

“Please note, we are no longer using our online booking system, so payment on the event night will be necessary. Cash only please! Receipts will be given.

“Look forward to seeing you there folks!”

The reservoir is also creating a small area where members of the public can plant trees “in memory or in celebration of a loved one”.

On Monday, May 20, three volunteers from Chard Watch CIC planted a range of trees, including hawthorn, crab apple and wild cherry, to provide a lower canopy layer in the woodland and food resources for wildlife.

Chard Reservoir is owned and managed by Somerset Council and is a recipient of the prestigious Green Flag Award.
