A CARERS support group has celebrated its 17th anniversary today (Monday, February 12).
The group, which holds meetings in Chard on the second Monday of every month at the English Martyrs Church on East Street, originally started on February 12, 2007.
Pat Galpin, who helped set up the group back in 2007, said: “There was no support group in Chard. There was one in Yeovil and one in Taunton, but none here in the area.
“There were nine people to begin, four of which are still with me today.
“We support the carer if they need help and if we cannot help them we know other people who can.
“Carers can also help each other and befriend one another. When you meet other people going through the same thing, you can share your experience and support each other.”
Pat also said backing and supporting local carers was in fact the biggest achievement for the group.
The carers group works closely with Spark Somerset.
Cath Holloway, the carers group coordinator, attended the group’s event today to celebrate its 17th anniversary.
Cath highlighted the importance the group has for the carers, and the different social activities it provides.
She also highlighted the importance of having speakers at the meetings, so that carers know what help is available.
The group meets at the English Martyrs Church Hall, 2 East Street, Chard, on the second Monday of every month from 10.30am to 12.30pm
