WINTER is setting in and Chard Wheelers focus now switches from racing to training and meeting up for more social affairs.
Cycling at this time of year is cold, mostly wet and windy. It gives riders that down time to train up ready for racing in 2024, or to even set new personal goals for the health benefits cycling offers.
Many like to choose to meet up with seldom seen friends for a spin and coffee.
Press secretary Mark Hughes said: “Cycling is tough, physically and mentally. You need Winter to reflect on the year, do I want to get faster or am I happy with how it is going? Cycling for a club provides that camaraderie, and enthusiasm to flourish.”
Sunday saw the club annual get together at the top of Wind-whistle hill for their downhill challenge. This consists of riders freewheeling one at a time to the bottom, the rider that goes the furthest before having to pedal, wins!
This year’s winner was Nick Thompson who almost set a new record for the longest freewheel. Nick almost got a third of the way to ilminster from the top of Wind-whistle, before having to put his foot down!
