AN APPLICATION to install solar panels on the roof of The Guildhall in Chard has been submitted to the council this week.

What has been proposed is “the installation of two arrays of photo-voltaic solar panelling (28 panels) to the rear building west roof slopes of the Guildhall.

A document from Acre Survey & Design said: “The statement is submitted in support of the ‘Full Planning Application’ and ‘Listed Building Consent’ applications for: The installation of 28 photo-voltaic solar panels to the west facing roof slopes of the rear buildings of the Guildhall.

“The stepped roof slopes dictate that the solar panelling will be split into two arrays referred to as “Array A” and “Array B”, formed of 16 and 12 panels respectively. This planning statement is a review of the impact that the proposal would have upon the appearance and setting of the Guildhall.”

The document also said: The justification for the proposal is that the Guildhall will further increase its usage of renewable energy and thus reduce its electricity consumption from the National Grid.

“Any surplus generated electricity created by the proposed solar panel arrays will be of financial benefit to the town council from National Grid Electricity Export Tariffs.

“The additional installation of more solar panels demonstrates that the town council administration is committed to reducing its own electricity running costs whilst reducing its carbon footprint.

“Both of these factors are of benefit to all the Council Tax paying citizens of Chard and will forge sound understanding from businesses and the general public.

“The mounting of the proposed solar panels is onto horizontal metal rails, and these rails would be securely bolted and sealed to the longitudinal “ribs” of the existing roof surface.

“The projection from the top of the roof rib to the exposed face of the proposed solar panel array would be no more than 75mm. For an indication, the existing roof lights situated on the apex of the highest roof slope in the photo, protrude further from the roof slope than the proposed solar panel arrays.”

The document also quotes a planning agent: “The proposal will provide a viable source of renewable electricity for the Guildhall, thus reducing its carbon footprint.

“This will be achieved with no noticeable impact or detriment to the local historic setting of this important Listed Building. On this basis, I believe this application should be considered for approval.”
