CARS will now have to travel at 20mph past a primary school in Chard, before and after the school day.
Councillor Connor Payne has announced that, as part of a council initiative, Manor Court Community Primary School will be getting 20mph signs that cars will have to abide by when the lights flash. The signs are set to be installed in May.
He said this is to ensure student safety before and after the school day.
"These signs are proven to reduce average vehicle speeds by 9 mph and child accident rates by 60%," he said in a post on Facebook.
"So it is welcomed by the parents, teachers and students who desperately need this added safety.
"I’ve also asked Somerset Council Highways to conduct a safety audit to see if we can push the barriers against the pavement to stop unsafe drop-offs outside the school. We’re also looking at putting ‘No Parking at Any Time’ signs to stop this.
"If you have any issues, or would like safety on your road improved, please contact me through my website (cllrconnorpayne.uk) or email connor.payne@somerset.gov.uk."
