SEVERAL schools in South Somerset are closed today due to “bad weather”.

Seven schools in the area announced their closures or restricted opening hours, and a list was published on the Somerset County Council website.

According to the website, all the schools on the list mentioned “bad weather” as the reason for the closure.

“Heavy snow” and “icy road conditions” were also mentioned as factors leading to the closures.

The list includes the following schools:

  • Ash CofE Primary School (Martock)
  • East Coker Community Primary School
  • Fairmead School (Yeovil)
  • Martock CofE Primary School
  • South Somerset Partnership School (Yeovil)
  • West Coker CofE VC Primary School
  • Westfield Academy (Yeovil)

All the schools on the list will be closed today (January 18) and West Coker Primary School will also be closed tomorrow (January 19).

The council’s website also showed the following notes to include more details about each affected school.

Ash CofE Primary School “implemented a partial closure due to the snow and icy road conditions to ensure all our pupils and staff can get home safely.”

Fairmead School said, “due to the unforeseen weather and road conditions the school is closing.”

A note about Martock Primary School said “heavy snow began to fall and settle, ice weather warning and accidents on route.”

South Somerset Partnership School said it will close “by noon on January 18 (today). Website will be updated later with further information regarding tomorrow.”

A note about West Coker School said “A30 arterial road has slowed, and snow is settling on it. No sign of stopping. Cold weather likely to lead to freezing temperatures and dangerous conditions.”

A message about Westfield Academy said: “Parents have been notified that the school has closed due to bad weather.

“Children are going home as soon as parental permission has been granted via a Google Form.”

East Coker School said “information will go out on the school website regarding being open on 19th January”.
