YEOVIL MP Marcus Fysh has welcomed the news that four schools in his constituency have received a share of an improvement fund worth nearly £500 million.
Two schools in Chard - The Redstart Primary School and Manor Court Community Primary School - have been awarded funding from the Department for Education's Condition Improvement Fund (CIF).
The CIF is an annual bidding round that allows schools to secure capital to address problems including the poor condition of buildings, energy efficiency issues, or health and safety concerns.
The Redstart Primary School will use its allocation for a leaking roof replacement project.
Manor Court's funding application was linked to an “expired temporary classroom building”.
St Michael's Academy and Winsham Primary School in Yeovil have also been given funding for infrastructure projects.
Mr Fysh said: “It’s great to hear that these local schools will get a boost from the Condition Improvement Fund, which is a Government scheme to give direct targeted funding for schools that need some help to repair or upgrade facilities.
“I hope the works go well and can be enjoyed by all soon. Whilst these things are rightly subject to a robust process, if any schools are thinking of putting in a bid then I will certainly support them.
“School design is a really interesting area and studies show that the quality of environment and use of outdoor spaces can have a big impact on children’s learning and wellbeing so it’s well worth focussing on.”
The results of this year's bidding round was announced on Friday, May 13 by the Department for Education.
Schools in Taunton, Wellington, Bridgwater, Shepton Mallet, Frome, and Langport were also successful in their bids.
Projects they will use the money for include a boiler room refurbishment, critical heating works, a fire safety compliance project, and safeguarding and site security work.
