PUPILS at Avishayes Primary School in Chard dressed up as their favourite book characters earlier this month to celebrate World Book Day.
The school also held workshops with Epic Tales, whose storytellers have appeared at Glastonbury Festival, represented Roald Dahl on ITV, and presented the renowned Oxford Reading Tree’s Traditional Tales.
Children arrived at school dressed as characters including Thomas the Tank Engine, Paddington Bear, and Peter Rabbit, while teachers also got into the spirit of the day.
Headteacher Clare Rinaldi said: "On Thursday, March 3, Avishayes Primary School was full of book characters from Gangsta Granny to Harry Potter.
"We had storytelling workshops throughout the day with Chip from Epic Tales with children inventing their own marvellous characters and settings.
"The children also designed t-shirts to celebrate the 25-year anniversary of World Book Day.
"The winning designs will be made into real t-shirts and presented to the winners."
World Book Day is held annually to promote reading for pleasure and to give every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.
The charity of the same name wants to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, develop a lifelong habit of reading for pleasure to benefit from the improved life chances it brings.
The day has been designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and it is marked in over 100 countries.
