THE CHARD Wheelers took on an exciting new challenge this week - cyclocross.
A typical cyclocross race consists of laps of a course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles requiring the rider to dismount, carry the bike while navigating the obstruction and remount.
After a two year break, the Wheelers competed in the first round of the South West Cyclocross league at the iconic Cricket St Thomas course earlier this month.
Organised by the club, it twists and turns up from the valley floor and back down again making it an incredibly technical and a test for any cyclist, the course drew a record amount of 222 entries across all age categories.
The huge amount of entries made for very competitive racing and spectators were treated to some amazing bike handling.
Looking ahead the success of the event should cement its place in the calendar for many years to come.
The club encourages more people from the area to try their hand at this exciting sport; if you are interested head over to the Chard Wheelers Facebook page.
