ILMINSTER'S carnival processions will be led by ten-year-old Emma Bambury, who was unveiled as the town's carnival princess on Monday.

Emma, who goes to Swanmead Community School, raised an impressive £526.40 to take the crown this year.

She will lead the Children's Carnival on September 30 and the illuminated grand procession on October 7.

She told the News: "It's exciting - I've watched the carnival every year since I was born."

Emma raised the money by selling princess tickets and organising events like a mile of pennies and holding fundraising stalls. "I'm looking forward to carnival and I'd like to thank everyone who supported me," she added.

Emma's mum, Deborah, added a special thanks to Alison Rowswell for helping with the fundraising.

The money goes to carnival charities, with Ilminster First Responders the main recipient.

Ilminster Carnival Committee chairman Jeremy Gapper said: "Congratulations to Emma for doing a great job - we look forward to her appearances at this year's processions."

Emma will be crowned by 2004 carnival princess Kirsty Webber before the children's carnival.

Last year no one came forward for the princess competition, so organiser Kym Toms said she was pleased the town would have carnival royalty this year.

"It's good to have a princess this year. Hopefully this will raise awareness for next year," she said.

Emma will be chauffeur driven by Martin Webber, of Taunton Land Rover.
