THE King’s Head pub in Merriott is re-opening this evening (Friday, November 29) after being put up for sale by the previous owners Mike and Julie Cable who made the “difficult decision” to retire.
According to Symonds and Sampson there was “considerable local interest” in the traditional 17th century pub, which has been at the heart of the Somerset village since 1696.
Following a competitive tender exercise, a sale was agreed upon to Jane Hamlin, who was born and raised in Merriott.
The pub has remained closed whilst refurbishment works are being carried out, and Jane is very much looking forward to the re-opening.

“I’m very excited to take ownership of The King’s Head and I have a lot of new ideas, as well as building on the excellent work that the previous owners have done in keeping the pub the social centre of the village. As a local girl, I look forward to welcoming back old and new customers when we re-open on Friday, November 29.”
Mike and Julie commented that they were delighted that they were able to sell the business to Jane.
“When we made our decision to sell, we wanted to make sure that the new owner would continue to provide quality service, with the local community at the forefront of the business plan. Jane’s local roots were an important part of why we decided to sell to her. We are staying local, and we look forward to enjoying the hospitality that Jane will provide in future,” they added happily.
Partner Ryan Holmes, who works for Symonds and Sampson, is looking forward to the pub reopening.
He said: “The trade for leisure and hospitality premises is difficult. However, this sale shows that when there is such support for a ‘heart of the community’ pub such as the King's Head, which has a fine reputation, there is demand.”
