Adam Dance, Liberal Democrat MP for Yeovil, is calling for a complete ban on bonuses for water company executives.

This comes after Ofwat blocked three companies from using customer money for executive bonuses.

A move that the Liberal Democrats believe does not go far enough.

They are pushing for changes to the Government’s Water (Special Measures) Bill, suggesting a complete ban on bonuses until sewage spills stop and leaks are fixed.

Ofwat has revealed that water companies paid £9.3 million in bonuses last year.

The regulator has also warned that water bills will rise more than expected next year.

Mr Dance said: "Our rivers in Yeovil and South Somerset have suffered from years of raw sewage being dumped by water firms who prioritise profits over the environment.

"For too long, the previous Conservative Government allowed water companies to get away with polluting our waterways while handing out millions in bonuses to executives.

"It’s time for the Government to act.

"They must prioritise the Water Bill in Parliament and bring in a full ban on bonuses until these companies stop sewage spills and fix leaks.

"Those who harm our local environment should not be rewarded for doing so.

"Enough is enough."
