Adam Dance, MP for Yeovil, hosted a special event in Parliament this week in collaboration with Screwfix.
The event, held on November 18, brought together more than 90 guests, including tradespeople, MPs, and representatives from third-sector organisations in the building and retrofit industries.
The focus of the event was to highlight the critical role of trades in supporting the UK's economic growth and addressing the nation's current skills shortage.
It featured more than 20 finalists from Screwfix's annual competitions, Trade Apprentice and Top Tradesperson, who shared their experiences in the trade.
With tradespeople making up more than 80 per cent of the sector workforce, mostly as sole traders or small business owners, their insights are crucial in understanding the industry's current challenges and future needs.
In his opening remarks, Mr Dance, a qualified bricklayer and son of a builder, emphasised the importance of skilled trades for communities in the South West and beyond.
He noted the significant shortage of professionally trained people, which impacts his constituents' ability to find reliable, skilled workers.
Mr Dance said: "I know how crucial the work you do is—not only for our communities but for the entire country.
"The current trade skills shortage is projected to reach 250,000 by 2030, and with the government’s plans to build over 1.5 million homes and retrofit millions more, we need a strong, supported trade workforce."
Screwfix, one of the largest employers in Mr Dance's constituency, with 1,000 people working at its Yeovil headquarters, has been actively supporting tradespeople through its initiatives and competitions.
John Mewett, CEO of Screwfix, added: "We were delighted to welcome tradespeople and apprentices to the Houses of Parliament to share their stories and emphasise the value of pursuing a career in the trade.
"Our latest Voice of the Trade report highlights the need for greater support to help tradespeople take on apprentices and the importance of promoting trade careers as a viable option to younger generations."
The event provided a platform for tradespeople to share their experiences in starting and running businesses, working with apprentices, and contributing to the industry.
As part of the event, Mr Dance welcomed Astrid Arnold, Screwfix’s Top Trade Winner for 2023, and Mohammed Rahman, Top Trade Winner for 2024, who shared their journeys in the industry.
Mr Dance closed the event by thanking Screwfix, the attending tradespeople, and all stakeholders for their dedication.
He said: "Your commitment to excellence and to your communities is truly inspiring.
"It’s essential that we continue to support and grow the next generation of skilled trades, ensuring a sustainable future for the UK."
