Adam Dance has delivered his maiden speech in the House of Commons.

The Yeovil and South Somerset MP paid tribute to the late Rt Hon Paddy Ashdown, former MP for Yeovil and leader of the Liberal Democrat Party, as well as David Laws, the last Liberal Democrat to represent the area, for their inspiration and guidance.

Mr Dance touched on the history of his constituency, including Crewkerne's contribution to Admiral Nelson's flagship, the Victory, and the development of engineering company Petters in Yeovil, now known as Leonardo and one of the town's major employers.

He also shared his personal experiences of growing up with ADHD and dyslexia, offering a message of hope for young people.

The MP said: "I say to young people everywhere, don’t let the system put you down, don’t let them tell you with ADHD and dyslexia you need to find suitable work as you won’t make anything of your life otherwise."

Mr Dance highlighted the importance of good teachers in his journey to becoming the representative for around 100,000 people.

Concluding his speech on the day of the U.S election, he said: "We can... act with foresight... and ensure that our great country, as today our friends in America, can chart a course towards opportunity and fairness for all."
