Leonardo's partnership with a food donation app firm has had a positive impact, according to new figures.
Since the aerospace engineering company began working with Olio last October, they have saved 793,600 litres of water and avoided 4,582 kg of CO2 emissions—equivalent to keeping 15,579 car miles off the road.
In Yeovil alone, Leonardo has donated 900 kg of food, saving 626,200 litres of water and avoiding 3,616 kg of CO2 emissions, the same as taking 12,293 car miles off the road.
The scheme ensures unused meals, fruit, vegetables and baked goods from Leonardo's employee canteens in Yeovil, Basildon, Edinburgh, Luton and Southampton are donated to local communities.
Feedback from a user described Olio as "a huge help" during difficult times.
Zevi Watmough, sustainability spokesperson for Leonardo, said: "Food security continues to be a problem for many, which is why the work Olio is doing is so important.
"We are proud to support this programme."
The app allows people to access food privately.
Each week, Leonardo's catering teams prepare food for collection by Olio, who perform quality checks before listing it on the app.
Local people can then arrange to collect the food from an Olio volunteer.
