Somerset Ferne Animal Sanctuary is shining the light on one of its 120 volunteers in celebration of Volunteer Week.

Harry has been lending his time and energy at the charity for several months.

Situated amid Somerset's picturesque Blackdown Hills, Ferne Animal Sanctuary is home to over 300 animals - all benefitting from the dedication and love from its volunteer workforce.

Harry said: "I’ve always had a deep love for horses, and volunteering at Ferne Animal Sanctuary seemed like the perfect opportunity to combine my passion with valuable work experience."

He added that he originally found the volunteer opportunity via the sanctuary's website.

Prior to joining the sanctuary, Harry volunteered for an equine therapy charity and a health and social care organisation.

His motivation to help is evident through such experiences.

A typical day for Harry includes cleaning stables, preparing feed and hay nets, turning the horses out, and assisting with general duties like vet visits and fencing.

"I get lots on nose nuzzles and the occasional cuddle in my day, especially when it’s time to feed", he shared enthusiastically.

Harry devotes every Monday and Tuesday from 8am to 5pm to his volunteer duties.

He explained: "It fits very easily into my life, I look forward to it every week,", highlighting that the sanctuary is flexible with volunteer contribution in accordance to each individual's availability.

When asked about the skills crucial to his role, Harry listed teamwork, communication, patience with animals, understanding their history, listening, and time management among others.

Harry added: "Because each day brings new experiences, I feel like I am constantly developing new skills and growing in my role".

In terms of induction, Harry praised the sanctuary for its comprehensive and supportive training, involving detailed introductions to each horse and their specific needs, coupled with focused inquiries about their care.

Understanding the impact of his work, Harry said: "My work at Ferne Animal Sanctuary promotes the healthy treatment and care of horses, many of whom have not experienced this level of care before arriving here."

Finally, when asked if he'd recommend volunteering at the sanctuary, Harry responded with a resounding "Yes, definitely.

"It’s an amazing place to support animals and learn new skills."

As Volunteer Week unfolds, Harry's story underlines the profound impact individuals are capable of when they dedicate themselves to causes they are passionate about.
