VOLUNTEERS who run Langport & District Red Cross Shop have provided much-needed support for local Ukrainian refugees.
They opened the shop for the refugees on Saturday afternoon on September 17, so that they could help themselves to donated items they need whilst they are residing in South Somerset.
From all reports this service was much appreciated by all who attended.
A spokesperson for the Langport & District Red Cross said: "They had many laughs trying on typical English garments, especially the wool hats knitted by one of our customers.
"Customers at our Shop have also donated over £5300 to our bucket collection, all of which has been donated to the British Red Cross/Disasters Emergency Committee."
The Ukrainian refugee community is growing in the area according to the latest data recorded in August, 2022.
Hundreds of visas have been issued for Ukrainians to stay with hosts in South Somerset – but a new survey reveals hosts across the country need support from the Government to continue as costs soar.
Since March, Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion have been able to apply for a visa to stay in the UK under the Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme.
The scheme, also known as "Homes for Ukraine", allows individuals to host refugees for a minimum of six months.
As of August 2, 331 visas had been issued for refugees staying with hosts in South Somerset – 261 of which had arrived in the UK as of the day before.
Data from the Department of Education shows 288 refugee pupils had been offered school places across Somerset as of July 26.
Another 37% say they would consider hosting people fleeing from foreign conflicts again.
During the height of the invasion on Ukraine, South Somerset District Council leader Val Keitch said: “Many residents in the district will no doubt be thinking about what they can do to help in terms of supporting the humanitarian response to this crisis.
“There are a number of national fundraising efforts underway through the Red Cross and other charities, and we are committed to helping in any way we can.”
There are still ways you can help our help Ukrainian refugees to allow them to settle safely in Somerset.
