YEOVIL MP Marcus Fysh has paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who died “peacefully” at Balmoral Castle yesterday afternoon.
The UK's longest-reigning monarch passed away at the age of 96.
Charles III acceded to the throne upon the Queen's death but will not be formally proclaimed King until an Accession Council is held at St James’s Palace on Saturday.
Mr Fysh – whose Yeovil constituency includes Chard, Ilminster, and Crewkerne – paid tribute to the Queen on Twitter yesterday evening.
He said: “It is with great sadness that people in the Yeovil constituency will be receiving news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
“The love and respect her people had for her will endure, as will the spirit of the United Kingdom she did so much for.
“May she rest in peace. God Save The King.”
King Charles III has said a period of “Royal Mourning” for the Queen will be observed from now until seven days after her funeral.
He is due to return to London today from Balmoral as the first full day of his reign begins.
The new monarch is expected to hold his first audience with Prime Minister Liz Truss and address the nation on television this evening.
