CHARD kicked off its Platinum Jubilee celebrations with free lantern-making workshops at the Guildhall thanks to a local arts organisation.
There were two workshops held on Thursday, June 2: One between 10am and 12pm, and one between 1pm and 3pm.
Following the first session, Chard Town Council wrote on Facebook: “Off to a great start here at the Guildhall with a great turnout at the first lantern-making workshop.”
The council later wrote: “Our second round of lantern workshops was equally as successful, with in the region of 150 bottles transformed into lanterns.
“Thanks to Emerald Ant for delivering these workshops. We can’t wait to see these lit up tonight!”
The bottles used in the sessions to make lanterns were provided by Brazier Coffee Roasters and Eleos Café.
Thursday also saw the Town Crier make his Jubilee proclamation from the Guildhall's balcony, which was live-streamed on Facebook.
The town council later encouraged workshop-goers to bring their lanterns to the town's parade from the Guildhall to the beacon for the lighting ceremony at 9:45pm.
Throughout the rest of the Platinum Jubilee weekend, there was a civic parade, a service at St Mary's Anglican Church, and a variety show at the Guildhall.
As the weekend of celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne drew to a close, the monarch said she was “humbled and deeply touched that so many people have taken to the streets to celebrate my Platinum Jubilee”.
She added: “I thank you most sincerely for your good wishes and for the part you have played in these happy celebrations.”
