THE Queen has written a letter to a primary school in South Somerset to thank them for planting a tree.
In a letter from Windsor Castle, signed by The Queen's Lady-in-Waiting, Jennifer Gordon Lennox, the children are thanked for the photos and drawings of their tree.
The planting of the tree was done to support The Queen's Green Canopy Project at St Margaret's Primary School in Tintinhull.
The letter states: "Her Majesty wishes to thank you all for the lovely letter you wrote about your primary school and its various projects aimed at helping the local environment by planting saplings and designing gardens … and hopes your Ginko tree will flourish and grow in the years to come."
The school planted 30 saplings – birches, rowans and cherry trees – in December and back in 2020 pupils put in 600 bulbs in the grounds of the school.
These included tulips, daffodils, crocuses and grape hyacinths.
“We were all thrilled to receive the letter from The Queen,” said headteacher Hayley Robinson.
“And it’s the first time in the school’s 150-year history that a reigning monarch has written to us.
"It’s a wonderful recognition of all the hard work by staff and pupils to help the environment and encourage a love of nature.”
The school has also recently won two national green awards from the Woodland Trust and Royal Horticultural Society.
