AN independent Somerset school is applying for permission to renovate its pavilion - and to build a new changing rooms block.

The King's School, in Bruton, has lodged a planning application with South Somerset District Council for works to the Hyde Pavilion, and the development of a new building on the site, in Dropping Lane.

The application, compiled by NVB Architects, says the work is necessary to restore the current pavilion, and to bring facilities up to date.

"The current pavilion requires modernisation and renovation in order to maximise the potential and use of this facility," it reads.

"The pavilion currently has two changing rooms, although these are very small (12m² and 19m²) and do not have adequate showering and sanitary provision."

The existing building also needs to be improved for accessibility, it adds.

"There is a social room which is used for teas and refreshments and is catered from a kitchen," the plan reads.

"The pavilion has no storage which restricts its use.

"The building is showing signs of some structural movement which will be repaired as part of the proposals.

"Despite all of this, the pavilion is a characterful building, fits into its surroundings and the school is keen to retain and restore it."

The Hyde Pavilion is currently used as the school's cricket pavilion, as well as the school chaplain's residence, which is unaffected by the proposed scheme.

As part of the work to the current pavilion, a new 'external viewing terrace' would be created, connected to a new 'social space'.

Meanwhile, the new building would be 'subservient' to the Hyde Pavilion.

"The new changing room pavilion is located to the north of the Hyde Pavilion," the application reads.

"The proximity is important for staffing and pupil safety.

"The new building is designed to be subservient to the Hyde Pavilion with a lower roof line and a simple form consisting of a monopitch roof and veranda."

The plans are set to be considered by South Somerset District Council.
