SOMERSET’S baking vet Rosie has made it to the semi-final of the Great British Bake Off as the show waved farewell to one of the fan favourites.
The quarter final saw the remaining five contestants challenged by pastry week, and it was one-time star baker Henry who crumbled under the pressure.
The first challenge, a signature bake, was to create a tarte tartin.
Rosie Brandreth-Poynter, who lives in Shepton Beauchamp and works for Isle Valley Vets, filled her first effort with shallots, aubergines and goat’s cheese.
She accidentally added double the amount of butter needed for her pastry, and was left serving up a dreaded ‘soggy bottom’.
The technical challenge saw bakers produce a Moroccan pie using Warqa pastry.
The side of Rosie’s effort had burst, but despite the pie explosion her textures and flavours secured her second place.
Judge Prue Leith said: “There was some debate on this, but your pastry was so excellent and flavoursome and the filling was so nice we gave you second.”
Contestants’ last chance for a semi final spot was the showstopper, a vertical pie.
The pastry structure had to have at least three pies, but Rosie went all in with a fairytale creation featuring nine pies, including a vegetable and Camembert dragon.
The judges said her design was ‘amazing’, with Prue adding: “It’s just lovely and imaginative, and very funny too which I love.”
Although her flavours were good, the pastry and the filling were both dry.
The previous week saw Henry, 20, secure a Holywood Handshake and then star baker, but he struggled this week.
The technical saw his under-flavoured Moroccan pie collapse under its own weight, while his showstopper was ‘bone dry’.
Henry became a fan-favourite for his habit of wearing a shirt and tie, even in the summer sun.
He said: “In my last episode there was a heatwave in the tent - the lovely people in the crew gave us icy tea towels to wrap round our necks - but I was determined to keep my tie on.
“I wore a shirt and tie early on in the series, basically because I didn’t have many clean T-shirts, and I’m not entirely sure why I carried it on.
“But I felt it was a bit of a good luck charm.”
Steph won her fourth star baker of the series.
Bake Off is on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
