YOUNGSTERS from around Chard got stuck in to help the town bloom last week.

Groups of children from Manor Court, Avishayes and Chard Schools braved the wind and rain to do their bit for the Chard in Bloom effort.

Children helped plant large decorative tubs along Howards Row on Thursday.

The large cast iron planters, sponsored by Oscar Mayer, were delivered to each school where children took part in decorating them ready for planting.

Chard in Bloom was formed at the beginning of the year as an independent group to help make Chard attractive and score high in the South West in Bloom competition.

South West in Bloom looks at the presentation and use of flowers and greenery in public spaces, how the community have been involved, and the absence of litter, mess and graffiti.

Chard has won silver in the South West in Bloom competition for the past three years and organisers are determined to land gold this time around.

The competition assesses towns on their floral display, and overall tidiness and appearance.

The group is asking for people to come forward to help clean up litter on the day before judging, which is set to take place some time in July.
