PLANS for a new building next to an Ilminster pub were deferred for further consultation at a meeting on Wednesday.

As reported in the News, South Somerset District Council's Area West Committee was set to discuss the plans to build a garden room adjoining the Stonemason's pub in Harts Close.

Plans had caused much confusion with Marston's brewery, in charge of the pub, intending to use the room for people to eat and smoke.

The brewery said its all-weather room complies with new laws banning smoking in enclosed public places from July 1 because it has three open sides.

But South Somerset District Council's planning officer John Millar said he had informed the applicants the room is unsuitable for smokers because it is more than 50% enclosed.

He said: "The applicant has been advised that the proposal is not suitable for use as a smoking shelter and that the structure will not pass the relevant smoking regulations."

People living near the pub also attended the meeting, including Ilminster Mayor, Carol Goodall, who spoke on behalf of the parish council.

She said: "When the pub was first built, officers spent a lot of time and effort on materials, lighting and planting all considered in great detail.

"The addition of this structure will do nothing to enhance the building or surrounding area."

She added: "The establishment is extending the garden area, which already generates a fair amount of noise.

"This will only increase that noise issue for residents."

Members discussed the design and placement of the structure, recommending deferral for further consultation and to allow clarity on intended use.
