A CREWKERNE shop has won approval to have an internally illuminated outside light, despite common practice in the town.
South Somerset District Council's Area West Committee approved the application at a meeting in Chard last Wednesday.
The plans are to display an internally illuminated fascia sign and an internally illuminated projecting sign on the front of the Boots store on Market Street.
The application was referred to the committee due to concerns about the internal illumination with the store being a listed building and in a conservation area.
Crewkerne Town Councillor, Angie Singleton, said: "It may seem petty, but Crewkerne Town council has always only permitted externally illuminated lights."
She added: "However, I have a feeling it might look better in the town if discretely done."
Planning officer Lee Walton said in his report: "While internal illumination is involved this is of the most discrete nature and quality quite opposed to the more traditional and rough appearance that has given rise t opposition against internal illumination.
"The current proposal would not detract from the character and appearance of the conservation area, the character of the listed building and, given the commercial nature of the town centre, is considered acceptable."
