AN APPLICATION to build three new houses behind a Chard hotel has been approved, despite the recommendations of planning officers.
Members of South Somerset District Council's Area West Committee heard plans for land behind the Bellplot Hotel on High Street at a meeting last night.
The plans are to build three two-bedroom houses as part of a car free development.
Members heard the report from officer, Stephen Banks, which said the site was not suitable for a car free development and should be refused on highways grounds.
He said: "The proposal would increase the use made of the existing substandard access. This would be prejudicial to highways safety.
"The proposal would also result in the loss of vehicular parking facilities and would therefore encourage parking on the highway with the consequent risk of additional hazards to all users of the road."
Cllr Nigel Mermagen said: "It's ridiculous to say there can't be a car free development in the centre of the town.
"If you can't have it here, you can't have it anywhere."
Members voted to go against the officer's advice and recommended the plans for acceptance under conditions to ensure future residents didn't have cars.
