SOUTH Somerset District Council is encouraging young people to go green and get creative on Sunday (June 17).
The council is supporting the Green Kidz area at the fifth South Somerset Green Fair and Scything Festival, held at the Thorney Lakes Campsite in Muchelney. This year promises to be bigger and better than ever, with the fair running from 10am-6pm and music continuing up to 10pm.
The Green Kidz area will be a hub of activity with young people taking part in a wide range of activities including circus skills, willow sculpture, stone carving and clay modelling. All events will take place inside an exciting range of structures - from geodesic domes to yurts and tepees.
The event is so green that the whole day will be powered by alternative energy provided through solar panels and wind turbines on a mobile trailer. The packed programme is to include local folk singers, funk rock artists and the popular band, Kangaroo Moon.
Hannah Aitken, young peoples officer at the council, said: "The Green Fair is great way for young people to learn about the uses of natural materials and to play and relax in a safe environment, while others can learn about green technology and positive initiatives happening locally."
The Community Green Fair group, based in the South Petherton and Langport area, organised the event, after recently having been awarded an Awards for All' lottery grant.
This has allowed them to take their renewable energy trailer, a portable Green Info Café' and Green Kidz activities to other events in the local area.
Cllr Sylvia Seal, portfolio holder for leisure, culture and wellbeing, said: "The Green Fair is an exiting way for young people and their parents to learn how to be environmentally aware."
