WINDWHISTLE Motor Club's Alison Lock and her historic Mini Cooper rally car have been in action again recently. On April 22, Alison and co-driver Barbara Alexander took part in the Talbenny Stages near Haverfordwest. Based on a disused airfield, this was a well organised and enjoyable event, and a round of the Classic Motorsports Welsh Clubmans Tarmac Rally Championship.
This meant that the 40-year-old historic specification Mini was again competing against much more modern and powerful machinery. The car ran faultlessly all day to finish fourth in a hotly contested and well supported 1400cc class, collecting good points for the championship.
Two weeks later the crew were back in Wales for the second outing of the year on the RDP Commercial Lawyers Welsh Rally on the Epynt military ranges. Based at Brecon, the rally was not a round of the MSA British Historic Rally Championship as it has been in recent years, but was a round of both the Welsh Tarmac and Dennis Motorsport Welsh Historic Rally Championship. A good clean run saw the girls take a class win in the historic section with times which would have placed them third in class in the modern event.
Excellent points were scored for both championships leaving the crew first in class in the Historic championship and second in class in the Tarmac Clubmans championship. They retain the overall lead in the K & R Motorsports ASWMC Historic Championship.
The next outing will be the Garth Tyres Midsummer Caerwent Stages this Sunday, June 17 which is a notoriously tight and twisty event which should suit the Mini, although power steering would be a bonus!
Thanks to Rob King and sponsors Millers Oils, Court Mill Builders, Brian Nesbitt plumbing & heating, Ilminster Auctions, AJB Decorating Services, Aga Kan and Dennis Motorsport, Tim Whellock Vintabe and Sports Car Services, to A E Coachworks for the respray and to Brian Dennis of Dennis Motorsport for the loan of the recce car for the Welsh rally.
