RICHARD REEVES

Published on 07/12/2011

REEVES Richard. The family of Dr. Richard Reeves wishes to thank everyone for their condolences and kind thoughts on his death in October. It has been so interesting to read the memories of him, and they were of much comfort to us. Our father loved the people of Chard and it's surrounding countryside. We also thank those who cared for him and for our mother, Mary, through their last years. In his last days he remained interested in the news, and what lies ahead for us all. We read this poem at his funeral: I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year, 'Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown'. And he replied, 'Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way!' So I went forth and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night. (M. Louise Haskins [1875-1957]) Read by King George VI at the outbreak of war.
