I’m Julie, a Community Coach for the Engage Somerset project, employed by a community interest company called Pluss.
I have been working in Chard over the last five weeks and have met so many inspiring people.
Engage Somerset is a community-based social prescribing service. We can help people who would like support with their self-confidence, self-esteem and wellbeing.
This can be physical and emotional. We try to focus on improving positive habits and skills that can help people move towards employment.
Other types of support available include improving someone’s digital skills, such as how to get the best out of your phone and how to use online messaging and feeling comfortable using the internet. We also seek to develop employability skills, such as CV writing, interview skills and effective job searching.
Community Coaches, such as myself, work with people through 1:1 coaching and motivational support, with topics that include money management, accessing benefits, housing needs, healthy eating and ways to lead a more active lifestyle.
I have been speaking with people about their goals, passions and needs.
One thing that has become very apparent is that many people are feeling lonely and isolated. The last couple of years have hit us hard.
To help with this, I have arranged a ‘Walk and Talk’ session. This will take place every Monday.
People can join others for a gentle stroll, have a natter and end the walk with a cuppa at the library.
I am also planning a ‘Listening Lounge’. This will be a venue within the town and, again, people can meet for a chat, make new friends or just sit quietly and have a coffee.
I have been working with individuals to assist them moving towards employment, working alongside partners such as, Abri, COSMIC and other existing employability provisions.
We are covering numerous topics including improving computer skills, CV writing, learning a new skill, building confidence and job searching. These can be offered on a one-to-one basis.
